Major Assignments
MAJOR ASSIGNMENT #9: NEW ANIMAL CREATION
Take your FOUR animal photos and open in Photopea (you should have a separate window for each).
- Create a File > New document that is 8.5 x 11 inches.
- Cut and paste body parts! Using your Selection Tools (Quick Selection, Lasso, Quick Mask), select the features you want from each photo and then using the Move Tool, drag that body part into your New Document.
- Each body part will have a separate layer. Match your body parts together... Edit > Transform and choose Scale, Rotate, Distort, Flip, etc.
- Adjust the colors of your Newimal to create a seamless look. Color > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation or Color > Adjustments > Color balance.
- Blend the body parts: Use the Eraser Tool, Blur Tool, Smudge Tool, Clone Stamp Tool to "blend."
- Once you are happy with how your creature fits together, select all the body part layers and Merge Layers (right click).
- Now, apply a filter (or several) over the entire Newimal - don't abstract it though. (Filter > Filter Gallery)
- Decide on your Newimal's natural habitat and drag that photo into your document. Scale it to fit into the background and drag this layer to the bottom, so that your newimal sits on top. Apply a filter to the background as well.
- Finishing touches: add your newimals shadow (burn and dodge tools), change the colors of your background, etc.
You will be evaluated on:
- Matching of body parts (Selection Tools, Scale, Rotate, Flip, Distort)
- Matching of colors (Hue/Saturation, Color Balance)
- Blending Techniques (Eraser, Blur, Smudge, Clone Stamp... including various opacities and settings)
- Creativity and Originality
Some tools and techniques
Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to get the mirror image of a photo or part of a photo.
Use the smudge tool to create "movement" in your art, make a photo look more "painterly" or blend areas of photo together. Use blur tool to make images more hazy and less defined.
The clone stamp tool allows you to duplicate part of an image. This can be used to cover up parts of the original image.
The dodge tool and the burn tool lighten or darken areas of the image. These tools are based on a traditional darkroom technique for regulating exposure on specific areas of print. Photographers hold back light to lighten an area on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print (burning).
- POST final image to your BLOG in MAJOR assignments.
- Upload your working PSD files to your google drive, Major assignments
- Due THURSDAY, May 20th by midnight.
Here is the link to the tutorial again for many of these tools:

- Set-up of Movie Poster & Critique your 1st draft (Due Thursday 4/15, MINOR GRADE)
- Revise and Finalize your Movie Poster (Due Monday 4/19, MAJOR GRADE)
Today and tomorrow, 4/12 - 4/13
Part 1: Research, Questionnaire, & Your Pet Photo Shoot (MINOR GRADE)
Your goal is to create a completely fictitious movie poster, that includes your pet.
If you don't happen to have a pet, you are going to make one! You can use a stuffed animal, anything you can put eyes on, like a pet rock, or if you are really desperate, replace the pet with a younger sibling.
STEP 1: Research
You are going to imitate a style or Genre of film posters - you can make your own from scratch or use an existing Movie Poster and edit it more than 40%.
RESEARCH: Google Movie Posters for Inspiration
- PICK A GENRE: Give considerable thought to the type of genre your movie will be. Will it be an action movie? Or science fiction?
- When googling movie posters, remember to select, TOOLS > Size: LARGE
- Make sure your images do not have any water marks on them
Research Resources:
Film Genre Ideas: http://www.createyourscreenplay.com/genrechart.htm
STEP 2: Complete the prep question assignment on google classroom (due today, 4/12)
STEP 3: THE PHOTO SHOOT
- Using your smart phone or digital camera, you are going to take a minimum of 4 poses of your "pet"
- Make sure you have LIVE off on your phone
- Try and take the photo with a solid background, like a plain wall
- Take full body photos, meaning include body and legs
- Take multiple photos of different poses. Think about how you want their pose in your poster
- Upload your photos to your google classroom assignment
- Upload your (4) photos to your blog by tomorrow (MINOR GRADE)
Here's some tips for photographing an animal:
Part 2: Set-up Movie Poster & Critique your 1st draft (MINOR GRADE)

MAJOR ASSIGNMENT #5: "What I Want You to Know About Me" Photo Collage
Today we will begin a new major assignment. I have set up the assignment in steps. Step 1 will start today. You will be given four class periods to do this project, but will need to use additional time on your own to complete it and submit it by the deadline.
This project is designed to help you develop Photoshop (or Photopea.com) skills and graphic design skills.
If you have Photoshop at home you may use it instead for this project. You may NOT use your phone or any other photo-collage app for this project.
This project is designed to help you develop Photoshop (or Photopea.com) skills and graphic design skills.
If you have Photoshop at home you may use it instead for this project. You may NOT use your phone or any other photo-collage app for this project.
You will also be using a site called Background Burner. It also works best if you log in with Google. You won't be using these websites until later but take a moment to create your accounts now, so that you do not forget.
Step 1: Inspiration Words and Images
- Now, go to the camera roll on your phone. Create a new album called 'Me'. Start adding photographs to the album that illustrate what you want your teachers and classmates to know about you.
- Try to pick photographs that you took or that others took of you.
- Avoid photographs that have any stickers added to them. Avoid photographs that have filters on them. When choosing these photos, think about:
- Things you care about
- Ideas that are important to you
- Things you are good at
- Things that you are interested in
- People in your life who inspire you
- Places that are meaningful to you
- People you love
- Now, email these photos to yourself 5 at a time. Do not upload them directly to your Google Drive, especially if you have an iPhone. IPhone uses a photo format that cannot be read on a Chromebook. When you email a photo it automatically converts to a JPEG format, which can universally be read and used on any device. (**CORRECTION** you may upload your photos directly to google drive or however you downloaded them for the photo logo assignment. If the photos download as HEIC, here is a website to transfer them to JPEG. https://convertio.co/heic-jpg/ )
- Download the images to your Chromebook and then upload them to this assignment in Google Classroom. DO NOT hit submit. Your teacher will be able to see the images. Add a private comment explaining how the images represent you.
- Next, gather together your very favorite quotes. Copy and paste them all into a Google Doc. You may use song lyrics but please edit out any curse words. You may use Bible quotes (or quotes from any religious text), quotes from your favorite books, movies, TV show characters, comedians, video games or anything else that inspires you, as long as you delete any profanity.
- I picked lots of quotes from famous artists and a quote from a science fiction writer.
- Submit your photos and word doc in Google Classroom for a minor grade
- DUE by midnight tonight
Step 2: Wordclouds
We will be using a website called Wordclouds.com. A word cloud is a design that makes the most frequently repeated words larger and the less frequently repeated words smaller. It eliminates punctuation and words like 'to' 'and' and 'the' so that it can focus mainly on the words that give your text meaning. Because of the quotes you selected your word cloud will look different from every other word cloud in the class.
Click Paste/Type
A dialogue box will appear. Copy and paste all your quotes together into the dialogue box and click 'Apply'. I recommend you type one after the other, no paragraph spaces in between.
Click on 'Shape' and pick a simple square or rectangle for this project.
Choose a color scheme. Play around with different color schemes to find one that appeals to you but remember that your word cloud is actually going to be the background for your final photo collage. If you wish to create an effective overall design, you will need to avoid bright and warm colors. Cool or neutral colors work best. I chose a gradient of cool colors.
Click 'Save' and 'Save as image'. You may use a PNG or JPEG.
Post to google classroom assignment "wordcloud image."
Due by midnight tonight.
Step 3: Photopea
Follow the steps:
- In photopea.com, create a NEW document
- size: 8 inches by 8 inches
- 200 dpi
- transparent background
2. Open your wordcloud quote image.
3. Remove white background using magic wand
4. Copy and Paste
- click control + A (select all)
- click control + C (copy)
- go to your new 8x8 document
- click control + V (paste)
5. Resize your words to fit the box
- click EDIT > TRANSFORM > SCALE
- hold the shift key as you change the size to keep the proportions
6. FILE > SAVE AS .PSD so you can continue working on this project tomorrow
7. SAVE as a JPEG and post to your blog in minor assignments by midnight tonight.
Step 4: Add your photos
In this step you will start to add the photos from step 1 that you like onto your image in photopea from yesterday. You will be using the website Removebg to play around removing the background from your images. You can also play around with layers and other features of photopea.com. Background burner was a website I was hoping to use but it was discontinued in February. Removebg.com is a similar website- it's free and easy to use. Log in with your school account.
You can also check out this tutorial to get ideas for adding your photos to your image. If you start around 7:30 minutes, it will start talking about ideas as to how to remove the backgrounds from your photos and some other features you may want to try.
You can also add photos like you did in your photo logo, but try to go a little further and learn something new!
After adding your photos, you will then add the text "YOUR NAME, what I want you to know about me" just like the two examples above step 1.
These are your final steps- adding the photos and text. Be creative and have fun exploring.
When complete, save as a JPEG and post to your blog in your minor assignments page.
Due Wednesday 3/31/21 by midnight.
MAJOR ASSIGNMENT #4: Design a business card
Design a business card for your imaginary business
Part 1: Business card rough sketch (1 version **FRONT & BACK) due Monday beginning of class. Draw on regular paper and post to google classroom. (minor grade).
Part 2: Final business card created in vectr.com (major grade) due Wednesday, 3/17, by midnight. Post in your major assignments page in your blog.
ROUGH DRAFT example:
Business Card Requirements:
- Follow the tutorial exactly for Step 1 and Step 5. The designing is up to you! https://vectr.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-stunning-business-card/
- Your business card must include:
- Front and Back
- Your color logo
- Pertinent contact info
- (name, business, phone, address, email, website)
- Services you can provide
- 3 color maximum - black counts as a color, white is not a color, tints of colors are fine
- No photos, internet pictures, clip art, raster images, etc. Stick with what you can do with vectr.com
- Export as JPEG and POST to your blog under MAJOR assignments. You will need to adjust the size before you export as a JPEG or it will appear blurry! Change to 196mm by 119mm which is the same as 740px by 450px. Thank you to Paul and Filip for recognizing the needed size change!
MAJOR ASSIGNMENT #3
For this project, you will design a set of three minimalist posters (movie, tv show, or book) by creating a simplistic image that could serve as an icon for the movie (tv show or book.)
- BRAINSTORM your favorite movies, tv shows, and books. CREATE A LIST. From your list, brainstorm main characters, colors, key scenes, your favorite scenes, objects, or outfits from that movie. You cannot create a poster that already exists. Perhaps they would be things that you would have to watch the movie to understand.
- ROUGH DRAFT (minor grade) Research a scene or character from your chosen tv show, movie, or book. DUE Wednesday 3/3
- Draw on regular paper a rough draft of what your minimalist movie poster will look like. (3 separate sketches of your ideas) Then WRITE the following when you submit it in google classroom.
- List colors you will use,
- List character names or scenes,
- Explain why you chose this subject.
- POST in your GOOGLE CLASSROOM assignment
- Create your poster in VECTR.COM
- Using the skills you have acquired so far, create your poster. Use basic shapes, pen tool, gradients, combine shapes, etc.
- As you work, take a look at the examples for inspiration. Usually the background is a solid color. If a poster already exists and you still want to do that movie, then select different images to use - DO NOT COPY! Create something that has not been created before. Think about having an interesting viewpoint and not showing the "whole" picture.
- DO NOT download images from the internet - YOU MUST draw each component of your poster.
- The title MUST be included somewhere in your poster.
- FINAL POSTER due Friday, 3/5, MAJOR GRADE. Post JPEG to your MAJOR assignments.
Watch these tutorials first to get an idea of what you will be creating.
Then read these articles to understand minimalist principles of design.
EXAMPLES: (do not copy these - CREATE your own design)
