Reminder, minimalist posters were due over the weekend. Today, you are going to start creating your own business. The first part we will tackle is: LOGO DESIGN
- Start thinking of what type of business you would like to create.
- Define your brand identity.
- Brainstorm and find inspiration for your design by researching the internet. Look at Dafont.com for font ideas. DO NOT copy someone else's logo. You can re-design a famous logo. You can create a fictional company logo. You can create a logo for yourself (screen name, family name, etc.)
- Choose your design style: classic, retro or vintage, modern and minimalist, fun and quirky, handmade and handcrafted, etc.
- Find the right type of logo... in addition to the overall style there are 7 main types of logos: monogram logos, logotypes, logo symbols, abstract logo marks, mascots, combination marks, and emblems.
- Pay attention to color schemes.
- Pick the right typography.
- Create options! 5 rough sketch versions of your logo design are due tomorrow, Tuesday, 3/9. Draw on regular paper. You can put all 5 on one paper. In addition, explain your business and the logo in at least three sentences. Post to assignment in google classroom.

VOCAB - Graphic Design Terms:
Bleed – Allowing a graphic or some other element to extend beyond the actual margin of the page. The element touches the side of the page, leaving no margin or white space at the edge.
Complementary colors
Complementary colors – The colors that are opposite of each other when viewed on the color wheel.
Grid – An important concept in graphic design, grids are often used in layouts for both web and print projects. Grids help graphic designers arrange text and images on the page in a way that will look even, attractive and consistent throughout. Grids can be used on paper or can be set up in graphic design software, such as Photoshop.
Mockup – The original design or idea created and either displayed on the screen (for instance, if you are a graphic designer specializing in web design and you want to show your client your ideas before you begin to code you might create a mockup in Photoshop and then show the client the mockup as a .jpg or PDF) or in a printed format (for example, a printed copy of the layout for a magazine or brochure spread for printer’s and clients to view before the actual product is produced). Mockups allow the client to see what the final product should look like.
Raster images – These images are created using thousands of pixels. They are not easily resized as are Vector images; enlarging a raster image too much will diminish quality. Photographs are an example of a raster image.
Resolution – Number of dots per inch, or dpi, in an image. Images for the web are usually be around 72 dpi, or a low resolution, while images for print should be around 300 dpi, or a higher resolution.
Anchor Point - Anchor points allow the user to manipulate a path’s shape or direction by clicking the point and moving it in a direction. They appear along the beginning of a path, at every curve, and at the end of a path. You can also add or subtract anchor points on a path.
Bad Break - Refers to widows or orphans in text copy; any break that causes awkward reading.
Border - The decorative design or edge of a surface, line, or area that forms it’s outer boundary.
Four-Color Process - A printing technique that creates colors by combining, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
Margins - Guidelines in a page layout software that shows a user the body copy areas. It also allows the user to indicate the dimensions. Margins are not supposed to be printed.

Today you will learn about vectr.com which is the chrome book equivalent software to Adobe Illustrator.
*Open a new tab and go to vectr.com (or if on ipad, it should be Vectornator)
*Click "use online"
*It will prompt you to follow a series of lessons to help you become acquainted with the site and it's tools.
*COMPLETE ALL INTRODUCTORY LESSONS.
This may take you a while and that is OK!
Once all introductory lessons are complete, go over to the minor assignments tab on our blog.

Once all are complete and submitted, you will continue to familiarize yourself with the design elements and principles through the two sets of google slides attached in google classroom. Then you will complete the questions on google docs. Remember, where the questions ask you to sketch a thumbnail, you will need to draw this on separate paper and submit a photo of it with your google doc when completed .

How to Set-up Your Folder in Google Drive
I WILL NOT grade documents that are labeled incorrectly or in the wrong folder.
- In your Google Drive, click NEW and select FOLDER
- Name your folder: FIRSTNAME LASTNAME GDesign_Spring2021
- Select your new folder
- Within that folder, click NEW and select FOLDER
- Create 3 new folders labeled:
- Major Assignments
- Minor Assignments
- Misc Files
- Return to your Google Drive
- Select the Folder labeled: FIRSTNAME LASTNAME GDesign_Spring2021
- Right click and select SHARE
- Input my email address: brooke.napoli@wtsdnj.com
- Be sure it says CAN EDIT
This will give me access to your Graphic Design files only.

Today you'll be creating your own blog using your school gmail account.
Your Blog name should include Your First Name and Your Last Name Initial, for example:

You will be required to create and maintain your personal blog, while adhering to the internet rules and regulations you've signed off on in order to participate in this course.

Think of your blog as your sketchbook, your very PUBLIC sketchbook.
While logged in under your school google account, google "blogger" and blogger.com should be the first option to click on. Once you click on it you will be prompted with the steps to follow. Make sure you create your blog name using the example above. If the name is already taken, try other variations.
We'll start blogging together, but if you need the instructions, google has very detailed instructions which you can view on your Chromebooks.
